Earl 16 wurde als John Earl Daley 1958 in Kingston, Jamaika geboren. Bereits als Teenager tourte er mit den ‘Flaming Phonics’ kreuz und quer über die Insel. Mit 15 setzte er sich in einem Gesangswettbewerb gegen Michael Rose (später Sänger von Black Uhuru), Junior Moore (The Tamlins) und Joe White durch. Darauf hin verließ Earl die Schule vorzeitig, weil er auf eine Karriere im Musikbusiness hoffte, worauf er allerdings erstmal von seiner Mutter vor die Tür gesetzt wurde.
Die Flaming Phonics brauchten also Geld und gingen für erste Aufnahmen ins Studio von Duke Reid. Dessen Angewohnheit, seine künstlerischen Hinweise an die Musiker mit dem Abfeuern seines Revolvers zu unterstreichen, verschreckte die Gruppe jedoch so sehr, dass sie die Aufnahmen nie fertig stellten und stattdessen zu Hermann Chin Loy gingen, wo Earl auch seine erste Soloaufnahme machte, „Hey Baby“. Die Gruppe löste sich bald auf, doch Earl 16 nahm 1975 für Joe Gibbs das wegweisende „Malcom X“ auf, das sein Schulfreund Winston McAnuff geschrieben hatte und welches später auch von Dennis Brown gecovert wurde.
1977 schloss er sich The Boris Gardener Happening an und lernte dadurch Lee Scratch Perry kennen, der ihn in sein Black Ark Studio einlud und mit ihm unter anderem die Originalversion von „White Belly Rat“ aufnahm. Es folgten Ende der 70er und Anfang der 80er zahlreiche Sessions für Derrick Harriott, Linval Thompson, Augustus Pablo, Sugar Minott, Yabby You, Mikey Dread und Clement Dodds Studio One.
Mitte der 80er Jahre siedelte der Earl nach England über und arbeitete u.a. mit Mad Professor und Leftfield. Seit 1995 ist er Sänger der Reggae/Electronic Crossoverband Dreadzone und hat zudem zahlreiche Soloplatten mit diversen Produzenten wie zuletzt etwa Nick Manaseh veröffentlicht. Sein Album „Steppin`Out“ von 1997 erschien auf dem Major Label WEA und wurde für einen MOBO Award nominiert. Neben der Studioarbeit tourte Earl ausgiebig mit Leftfield und Dreadzone, aber auch solo als „Reggae Ambassador“.
Für das Freedom Sounds Festival wird Earl 16 zusammen mit The Magic Touch ein spezielles Set spielen, in dem er einen Bogen von seinen Rocksteady & Ska Klassikern aus Studio One Zeiten hin zu den Roots Rockers Stücken der späten 70er und frühen 80er spannen wird – etwas, was er so bisher noch nie getan hat. Umso mehr freut sich Earl 16 und freuen wir uns auf dieses ganz besondere Konzert!

Earl 16, born John Earl Daley in Kingston Jamaica in 1958, is a bonafide reggae legend who started out as the lead vocalist for the group The Flaming Phonics, playing live around Jamaica. As a teenager, Earl Daley decided to drop out of school to pursue his music career, which prompted his mother to throw him out of the family home. Needing to make some money, the group tried out for producer Duke Reid, but left before finishing their recording for him due to his habit of firing live gunshots in the studio. They then worked with Herman Chin Loy, with Daley cutting his first solo track, „Hey Baby“. The group split up, with Daley concentrating on his solo career. Daley recorded „Malcolm X“ for producer Joe Gibbs in 1975 – a track written by his school-friend Winston McAnuff and later successfully covered by Dennis Brown. In 1977, he joined Boris Gardiner’s group, The Boris Gardiner Happening, which brought him into contact with Lee „Scratch“ Perry. In the late 1970s, after a spell with Derrick Harriott, Daley recorded four tracks at Perry’s Black Ark studio, including the original recording of „White Belly Rat“, also meeting Earl Morgan of The Heptones, who later produced his album, Shining Star. In the early 1980s he recorded singles for a variety of producers including Linval Thompson, Augustus Pablo, Clement Dodd, Sugar Minott, Yabby You and Derrick Harriott, and recorded his debut album with Mikey Dread. He teamed up with Roy Cousins for two albums, Julie and Special Request. Earlier material recorded for Studio One was released as 1985’s Showcase album.
In the 1990s he made guest appearances on tracks by Leftfield, and he has been one of the two vocalists for the UK electronica/reggae band Dreadzone since 1995. He signed to WEA for his major label debut album, 1997’s Steppin‘ Out, which was nominated for a MOBO award. Earl has continued touring and working with Dreadzone, as well as joining Leftfield on tours.
Recently, Earl has been working with producers in the UK and Europe, as well as doing shows all over the world as a Reggae Ambassador. For Freedom Sound Festival, Earl16 will bring a unique set with a mix of his Studio 1 Rocksteady and Ska classics as well as a selected few of his Rockers tunes, something he has never done before live on stage!
