UK’s Buena Vista Social Club

Mastermind Gaz Mayall calls his band the UK’s Buena Vista Social Club of Ska and taking a look at the impressive list of musicians that contributed to the new Trojans album, Smash It!, there is no arguing:
Drummer Rick Baxendale, veteran percussionist Tony Uter, founding sax players Rudy Valentino and Colin Humphreys are still on board as is Japanese sax whirlwind Megumi Mesaku (Ska Cubano, Top Cats). Antoin Ban O’Dochartaigh, who won the all Ireland national bagpipe championship aged sixteen, provides pipes, banjo and percussion. There’s the two Alpha Boys, Vin Gordon on trombone and Eddie “Tan Tan” Thornton on trumpet, a former Alpha Boy student who has played with everybody from Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames to Aswad, Jazz Jamaica to Kitty, Daisy & Lewis more recently.

New Members and musical legacy

Newer recruits include singer Zoe Devlin (a recent X-factor finalist), Nick Reynolds (Alabama 3, Ruts DC), Charles Louis Benjamin Woods (whose former band was UK reggae band Nightdoctor (their three singles for John Bradbury’s Race Records are highly sought after by collectors). Zoe Deviln will be with the band in the Freedom Sounds lineup.
Gaz Mayall, blues veteran John Mayall’s son and Eric Clapton’s godchild, is a true legend of the London music scene himself. For more than 33 years he has been running Gaz Rockin Blues in Soho, the longest-running club night in London by far. Selecting from his vast record collection, Gaz will also perform as a DJ at the allniter/after show party following the live bands. It’s a hit, not to be missed!
